Born on December 21, 1937, to the renowned actors Henry Fonda and Frances Ford Seymour, Jane Fonda has earned two Oscars. She has now attained success as both an actor and political activist.
Jane Fonda debuted as June Ryder in Tall Story, her first major film role in the 1960s. However, most agree that she truly made her mark in Cat Ballou, where she co-starred with Oscar-winning actor Lee Marvin. Her performance in Barbaella brought her recognition and transformed her into a sex symbol. Noted film critic Pauline Kael observed, “Fonda fully embraced her role, a rarity for established actresses.” Towards the end of the decade, Fonda had to turn down several offers, including lead roles in Bonnie and Clyde and Rosemary’s Baby. Additionally, she appeared in four Broadway productions during this period.
