Artists Anna Pilipyuk and Vladimir Shipotilnikov captured the pride associated with TV in the Soviet Union through their project “My First TV.” They collected photos of people posing with their television sets from the WWII era to Perestroika. In the late 1920s, America introduced televisions, while the Soviet Union introduced the first mechanical TV in 1932, which required a radio connection. Post-WWII, TV production and distribution increased in the USSR. By 1970, despite the high cost of 900-1200 rubles, 61% of urban families owned a TV, even with an average salary of 600-800 rubles.
