Adobe debuted Project Primrose, a dynamic and interactive dress that can rapidly change its design and style, at the Adobe MAX 2023: Sneaks presentation in Los Angeles on October 10th. During the unveiling, Christine Dierk amazed the audience by effortlessly transforming her dress, adorned with scales, with a simple click. In a video, Dierk explains that the dress can also be left animated and can detect the wearer’s movements, causing the design to gracefully sway in sync with their motion.
Project Primrose aims to create a wearable dress using non-emissive textiles. Content creators and designers can showcase their designs on this interactive dress, similar to a canvas. Adobe and Christine Dierk confirm that Project Primrose allows users to display content created with Adobe Firefly, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Stock, and Adobe Illustrator on the entire surface of the dress. This enables users to bring their designs to life with animation, simply by clicking a button. The project also suggests the potential adoption of this technology in other creative industries, such as furniture design.
Adobe’s Project Primrose could potentially integrate this technology into various surfaces, such as clothing and furniture, allowing designers to explore countless style options. This includes the ability to download and wear the latest designs from their favorite designers. Prior to Christine Dierk’s presentation of the interactive dress at Adobe MAX 2023, her research team, consisting of TJ Rhodes and Gavin Miller, had already published their studies in 2022. These studies focused on reflective light-diffuser modules for flexible display systems that do not emit light.
In the video, Adobe’s Project Primrose demonstrates responsiveness to external triggers. It can be used for new designs or as a low-power billboard displaying text-based ads. It is a non-emissive material that can be shaped and diffuses light dynamically. The researchers have already considered using the technology for fabrics like handbags before creating the interactive dress. The dress introduces more potential uses for Adobe’s Project Primrose that could impact the creative industries.
