The Anji Culture and Art Center, designed by MAD Architects, is set to become a stunning testament to the beauty of Anji’s natural environment. With its roof inspired by the elegant shape of bamboo leaves, this architectural masterpiece will house six distinct venues, including a theater, sports center, and art education center.

Located in close proximity to Shanghai, Anji has gained international recognition and even won the United Nations Habitat Award. Its lush tea fields and towering bamboo have served as the primary inspiration for MAD Architects, who aim to capture the region’s unique aura and seamlessly integrate it into everyday life.

The most striking feature of the center is its undulating white tiled roof, which mirrors the surrounding hilly landscape adorned with white tea plants. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this roof serves a functional purpose by allowing multiple courtyards and meeting spaces to be accessible from all sides, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. This design philosophy creates an immersive experience for visitors, enabling them to feel connected to nature while enjoying the cultural offerings within the center.

One of the highlights of the Anji Culture and Art Center is the impressive Grand Theater, capable of accommodating up to 1,300 spectators. This majestic venue, along with the Conference Center, will be spread across two to three floors, providing a sense of grandeur and sophistication. On the other hand, the remaining venues, such as the Youth Activity Center, will feature a more intimate one-floor layout, catering to a variety of cultural and recreational needs.

To further enhance the visual appeal of the center, MAD Architects has incorporated overlapping metal roofs that mimic the scattered arrangement of bamboo leaves. These roofs not only add a sculptural quality to the design but also allow dappled sunlight to filter through, creating a captivating interplay of light and shadow within the interior spaces.
