Pedal Skates: Riding Through History On Some Cool Wheels

Roller skating has had its ups and downs over the years, from disco roller rinks in the 1980s to the rise of roller-blades in the 1990s. Pedal skates, however, have remained a symbol of trendy transportation. Charles A. Nordling from Suisun, California, patented pedal skates in 1913 to make skating easier with pedal action to rotate the wheels. This innovation reduced the need for physical exertion, allowing skaters to reach higher speeds without dragging their feet. Nordling’s patent paved the way for future mechanical roller skates like the self-propelled roller skate in 1983 and the step action wheel skate in 1991.
