Seoul Skyscraper Places Futuristic Open Garden At Its Center

Seoul will have a new residential tower designed by New York-based ODA. The tower, named Terrarium Cheong-dam, won a competition due to its artistic design, which incorporates a two-story public podium supporting a 45-floor tower. The tower also features a semi-private terrarium and sky garden, bringing nature into the skies.

This is the first time Seoul has encouraged private-sector architecture to create public space in exchange for taller buildings. ODA took advantage of this opportunity by designing an open and inviting podium with a public park, water feature, sculpture gardens, and an indoor gallery. Eran Chen, founder of ODA, emphasizes the importance of expanding public spaces in urban environments. The terrarium, inspired by classical loggias, creates a connection between residents and office workers while providing a place for everyone to gather.

The completion date for the 656-foot-tall skyscraper is unknown, but it is expected to have a significant impact on Seoul’s urban landscape.
