Vienna-born graphic designer and painter Joseph Binder founded Wiener Graphik in 1924. His work was featured in Gebrauchsgraphik, a prominent German design magazine. He depicted natural images using geometric forms and bold colors in his Viennese creations. After teaching at the Chicago Art Institute and Minneapolis School of Art in the early 1930s, Binder shifted his focus to the United States. His international reputation grew in the 1930s with exhibitions in New York and Tokyo showcasing his posters. Binder’s Vienna studio closed in 1938, two years after his move to the US. Known for his streamlined images and vibrant color choices, Binder created iconic posters for the 1939 New York World’s Fair, Army Air Corps, and American Red Cross. He retired in 1963 to focus on painting and passed away from a heart attack while preparing for his 1972 Vienna exhibition. Below are some vintage posters created by Joseph Binder.
