Laurie Lipton, a native of New York, has been drawing since she was four years old. She made history by being the first person to graduate with honors with a Fine Arts Degree in Drawing from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pennsylvania. After living in several European countries, including Holland, Belgium, Germany, France, and London, for 36 years, she has recently returned to the USA.

Lipton’s work, extensively exhibited in Europe and the USA, is influenced by the religious paintings of the Flemish School. Despite trying to imitate the style of 16th century Dutch Masters, she unintentionally developed a distinctive drawing technique. While traveling across Europe as a student, she started creating tone using numerous delicate cross-hatching lines, resembling an egg tempera painting.
She acknowledges that her drawing method is “insane,” but believes that the resulting detail and luminosity justify the effort. She notes that her drawings often take longer to create than a painting of the same size and level of detail.
